President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama has just received an exceptional honor which was only reserved for the greatest athletes of all time. Previously, the University of Michigan’s honorary was received by football game captains like NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan, Baseball great Hank Aaron, and four-time Super Bowl MVP and Michigan alumnus Tom Brady.

However, the Hill’s John Bowden reports that the University has made an exception this year by offering the honor to former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.  The announcement was made by the Michigan Wolverines Head Coach, Jim Harbaugh for a home game in the coming season.

This is not the first time that Harbaugh is meeting the former First couple, there has been substantive history between the Obamas and Harbaugh. During, Barack Obama’s presidency, Harbaugh had worked with the First Lady Michelle to promote higher education through her Reach Higher initiative and meeting the President several times.

Back in 2015, President Obama had given a pep talk to the Wolverines following a tough loss to in-state rival Michigan State. “He was great,” Harbaugh said. “(He) told the fellas to keep their chin up… He told the guys to keep it going.”

President Gerald Ford was a star center for the University of Michigan in the 1930’s but, should they accept the invitation, the Obamas would be the first President and First Lady to serve as honorary captains in Ann Harbor.
